Dalmatian Delights

Six Adriatic countries in one tour.

Italy, Slovenia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Croatia and Albania, each with their unique culture, cuisine, landscapes, history and olde worlde charm.

Ride a current model road touring motorcycle through some of the finest coastal roads and mountain twisties we have found on the planet.

World On Wheels founder Mike Ferris personally leads each departure.

We don’t make everyone play follow-the-leader all day. Set your own pace on the open road; we’ll bunch up through busy towns and whenever the route calls for it. The mechanic and support vehicle run at the back with your luggage. There's plenty of time to meet the locals, sit and soak it all in, and give your photography skills a good workout.

Starts and finishes in Ljubljana. Approximately 3,300km of variable riding conditions and variable temperatures, cool in the mountains and warm on the Adriatic Coast.

International airfares not included.  Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory.

Winding mountain road through Morocco’s Dades Gorge

Ride your own ride.
We'll keep the group connected.

We know of some tour operators who keep the whole group bunched up together like a HOG parade at Sturgis.    That’s not our style at all.

Each morning we’ll show you where we’re going, how far we’re riding and where we expect to stop for lunch, fuel and sightseeing.

We use a proven corner-man system, so once we’re clear of the towns you can ride at a pace that suits you. We’ll bring everyone together through busy cities, complicated junctions and any section where it makes sense to stay close.

Isn’t this what riding is all about?

The long and winding road(s).

Our Dalmatian Delights tour isn’t just the usual tourist hotspots (although there are a few of those).

It's a comprehensive figure-of-8 traverse of six countries, taking the long way round to encompass coastal, mountain, and forested roads with lots of twisty climbs and beautiful seaside sweepers.

Sector 1:  From Ljubljana to the Italian Dolomites

Our first riding day begins in one of Europe's smallest capital cities, gorgeous Ljubljana in evergreen Slovenia. We take small rural roads to Lake Bled and then to the picturesque 'Adventure Capital' of Bovec in the foothills of the Julian Alps.

Crossing into Italy we climb through indescribably beautiful landscapes to arrive in the Corvara region of the Dolomite mountains. We have a 'rest day' here but of course we will all want to go riding! There are several loop rides available, including a lengthy run of 400km to Stelvio Pass and back.

The glorious roads continue as we weave our way back east, to Croatia.

Sector 2:  Plitvice National Park and mountain hinterland

We stay away from the coast just for now, visiting Croatia's amazing Plitvice wetlands Park, full of waterfalls, streams and lakes. We then ride across the barren and rugged high plains of Bosnia to visit the historic old cities of Sarajevo and Mostar.

Montenegro is next, a bit of a surprise package with simply sensational winding roads over the mountains and through steep, deep river canyons. Lots of tunnels here to keep us focussed, as some are completely unlit, with a steep gradient and maybe even a U-turn hidden in the dark!

Albania is another hidden little gem which often flies under the tourist's international radar but is well worth a visit. Our hotel here in the heart of Shkoder town is 700 years old!

Sector 3:  To the justifiably famous Croatian coastline

Looping back briefly through Montenegro brings us to the wonderful coastline of Croatia and its ancient port of Dubrovnik. We have a rest day where we charter a boat for a half-day cruise and then turn you loose to explore this spectacular landmark, which more recently of course has become a Game Of Thrones film set. It hasn't diminished the attraction at all, this is a gorgeous old town.

We then island-hop along the coast on superb roads apparently built with motorcycling in mind! Sweeping corners beautifully designed and meticulously maintained. This stretch has become something of a biking mecca, and you'll probably see all the cafe racers out in force.

Sector 4:  More gorgeous coast, and return to Ljubljana

We visit Hvar and Pag Islands with their exquisite blue harbours full of gorgeous little fishing and pleasure boats. The sensational roads continue further as we wind our way north-west to complete our loop of Croatia. White stone buildings and red terracotta rooves are the order of the day.

Our final day brings us back into the forests and manicured fields of Slovenia. Vineyards, agricultural crops and postcard-worthy villages line the way back to Ljubljana, where we farewell the bikes and reminisce over our farewell dinner with perhaps a glass of wine, on the wonders we've shared these past three weeks!

Will this ride suit you?

A full and unrestricted motorcycle licence is required.

You also need enough experience to handle a large-capacity bike on unfamiliar roads.

And of course, we must insist that you take out a comprehensive travel insurance policy which adequately covers motorcycling!

The Dalmatian Delights tour suits competent riders who are comfortable with:

  • Riding days of up to approximately 380km

  • Mountain bends and tight switchbacks

  • Busy towns and unfamiliar traffic

  • Changing road surfaces and weather

  • Cooler mountain conditions and hotter days along the coast

  • Following daily directions and the corner-marking system

  • Making sensible decisions about their own pace

You’ll also need a reasonable level of health, fitness and stamina. Some riding days are long, and the heat can build as we ride the Croatian coastline.

Solo riders, couples and pillions are welcome.

We’ve been continually refining this route since 2006

Our Dalmatian Delights tour has now operated more than 25 times.

We still make changes when we find a better road, nicer hotel, scenic stop, or motorcycle option. The route you ride today has been shaped by two decades of running the tour, not by just drawing a convenient line between the Adriatic's most famous places.

Mike Ferris has more than 30 years of experience in international motorcycle travel and will personally lead this departure. He is also a qualified motorcycle riding instructor, recognised and accredited by the New South Wales government in Australia. This depth of experience matters when the group reaches a difficult town, the weather turns, a motorcycle needs attention, or the day’s original plan no longer makes sense.

World On Wheels Moroccan Magic tour group in Morocco

The part you won’t see on the map

Ask riders what stays with them and you’ll hear everything from the switchbacks of the Dolomites, to the coastal islands of Croatia, or the high-altitude National Parks of Montenegro.  Then somebody mentions the group members.

Three weeks on the road has a way of turning solo riders, couples and oft-returning World On Wheels clients into firm friends who are still swapping stories long after the bikes have gone back.
